    News from MHSAA

All Michigan programs and parents, In September the MHSSA member programs discussed and voted on some key issues for Eligibility and Transfers effecting all Michigan programs. The result of that voting led to some rule changes for the 2023-2024 season that you will want to be sure you are aware of. We ask that you pass this along to your member families as well. Beginning in the 2023 season (next year), all programs must follow the MHSSA eligibility guidelines and transfer rules as set forth by the MHSSA throughout the entire season in order to be eligible to play in the state tournament. The eligibility guidelines and transfer rules will be updated to reflect these changes at the first of next year. Below is a summary of those new rules.  Any player that has taken part in a graduation ceremony, and/or received a high school diploma from a public school, private school, tech school, or home school is ineligible, regardless of age. A graduation party alone does not make one ineligible. A player must be on the team roster by Dec 1st in order to be able to play in the state tournament. An electronic roster (provided by the MHSSA) shall be maintained by each program. Requested changes may be submitted for approval after that date. Junior and Senior (17-18 yrs of age as of Sept 1st) transfers are required to sit out of all games through Dec 31st (may play on Jan 1st). Transfers may practice with the team while they are sitting out. Freshman and Sophomore (15-16 years of age as of Sept 1st) transfers are required to sit out all games through Nov 30th (may play on Dec 1st). Transfers may practice with the team while they are sitting out. Again, these rules will go into effect next year, and will apply to all the programs throughout Michigan, throughout the entire season, in order to be eligible to play in the state tournament. If you have any questions about these rules, feel free to email me regarding those items.  Thank you! Wayne Kauffman MHSSA President
